Ibutamoren (MK-677) is not really a SARM, but a growth hormone secretagogue. However, the substance is often classified in this group because they target quite similar but different hormonal systems (SARMs namely act on the androgen receptor). Therefore, we want to clarify here:

What is MK-677 (Ibutamoren)?
Ibutamoren is also known by the names and spellings MK-677, MK 677, MK-0677, L-163,191, Oratrope, or Nutrabol. The growth hormone secretagogue (GHS for short) MK-677 stimulates the long-lasting release of the insulin-like growth factor IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1) and the endogenous hormone ghrelin. This leads to an increase in lean muscle mass, improved sleep patterns, and several other desired effects.
Ibutamoren is being developed for medical purposes – namely, use in growth hormone deficiency, osteoporosis, etc. – but is increasingly being used by athletes, especially from bodybuilding and weight training, to build muscle. Since mid-2017, the compound has been in preclinical development for growth hormone deficiency.
Ibutamoren Effect
But how does Ibutamoren (MK-677) work at all? The substance is orally active, so you can use the preparation in tablet or capsule form. In addition, it is an extremely strong, selective and non-peptidic active ingredient. While MK-677 increases the growth hormone ghrelin and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) as desired, it does not affect cortisol levels.
Ibutamoren therefore increases fat-free body mass, i.e., lean muscle mass, and in tests was even able to reduce muscle loss during caloric deficit (i.e., during dieting).
Another great benefit of ibutamoren: it improves the bone mineral density. That is why it is used in osteoporosis research. And Sleep behavior may also be positively affected by MK-677. In a placebo-controlled study in healthy young subjects, REM sleep improved by 20% and deep sleep by 50% at a dose of 25 mg in the evening.

Because Ibutamoren mimics the hormone ghrelin and acts as a neuropeptide in the nervous system and also crosses the blood-brain barrier, it is possible that at overdose and too long application time the ghrelin receptors in the brain are overstimulated. One of the most common side effects is probably the increased appetite, which should disappear after a few months, however – and which many athletes also advocate when building mass. You may also experience water retention. When taking ibutamoren please always follow the manufacturer’s instructions exactly.
By the way, people who have suffered from cancer in the course of their lives should never use preparations that increase the level of growth hormone in the blood. Therefore, you should avoid ibutamoren in this case.
Ibutamoren Experience
We asked users of Ibutamoren about their very personal experiences. The majority of users reported that they were able to record a significant – i.e. perceptible and visible – increase in lean muscle mass already in the first cycle. Fat reserves, however, remained untouched in those who continued to exercise normally or less. Individuals reported slight water retention that disappeared after a short time. Others could not detect anything in this regard.
Most users confirmed that they had a increased feeling of hunger. Those who were in the building and massing phase could of course see this as a great advantage. After about 2 to 3 weeks, the feeling decreased noticeably. Likewise, some reported higher fatigue. However, since Ibutamoren is best taken in the evening before bed, many users saw this as an advantage.
Further, many users stated that they slept significantly better at night and woke up fitter and more refreshed in the morning. This also led them to find they had more energy, concentration, and stamina – in everyday life as well as during workouts. None of the users we interviewed reported any severe or unpleasant side effects.
Ibutamoren Intake and Dosage
Generally, a dose of 25 to 50 milligrams of ibutamoren per day is recommended. In mass building, up to 50 mg have proven helpful. During dieting – to counteract muscle loss – 25 mg per day is advised.
Since MK-677 can positively influence your sleep patterns, especially deep and REM sleep, most manufacturers recommend taking it before bedtime. Especially for those users who suffer from increased hunger pangs or fatigue, we also advise this.

Is Ibutamoren legal?

Similar to SARMs, growth hormone secretagogues such as ibutamors are also subject to certain regulations in Germany. According to the Anti-Doping Act (AntiDopG §2) and Doping Substances Quantity Ordinance (DmMV) the following is allowed:
Ibutamoren from legal sources you are allowed to possess and take in small amounts – a maximum of 150 mg – as an amateur athlete who does not want to gain a competitive advantage with it, in Germany.
Most ibutamoren supplements have a dosage between 10 and 30 mg. So you can legally own between 5 and 15 daily servings, depending on the preparation.
Ibutamoren at competitions
MK-677 is considered doping relevant. Since 2015, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has included growth hormone secretagogues (GHS) on its Prohibited List. Only the ghrelin mimetics anamorelin, ipamorelin and tabimorelin are named. Ibutamoren, however, is considered a related compound with similar effects and is therefore also banned in athletically organized competitions.
So please beware: if you want to participate or are participating in organized athletic competitions, then it is not allowed to possess or use Ibutamoren.
